Adding value to as many raw products an animal produces often means more financial return for the producer for nearly the same effort. Sheep are important part of the grazing landscape here, but mainly for the meat, and some milk. Their fiber is often discarded, or sold for very low prices. What’s the potential for utilizing the wool from sheep for value-added products? With funding provided from a USDA Value-Added Producer Grant, Kimberly Hagen and Suzy Hodgson worked with Open View Farm in New Haven to explore the feasibility of developing and manufacturing such products. They will report on what they found out.
